A skylight leak almost never starts where you see the water. The stain shows up on the ceiling, but the real opening is usually up in the flashing, the seal, or the shingles a foot or two above the glass. Water runs downhill under the roof before it drips, which is why guessing wastes time and lets the drywall keep soaking.
Our roofer starts on the roof, not just the ceiling. We check the metal flashing around all four sides, the rubber gasket on the frame, the condition of the shingles feeding into the top edge, and whether the curb is still sound. Then we run water in a controlled way to confirm the entry point before touching a thing. Once we know the source, we reseal or reflash it that visit and clean up after.
St. Louis skylights take a beating. Hot, humid summers cook the sealant, hard freezes in January crack it, and the fast pop-up storms that roll across The Hill, Tower Grove, and Webster Groves push wind-driven rain sideways under old flashing. A lot of the century homes in Lafayette Square and Soulard have skylights that were retrofit years ago with flashing that was never quite right. We see the same failure points again and again, so we know where to look first.
If your ceiling is already stained, call before the next storm. We serve Clayton, Kirkwood, Maplewood, University City, Dogtown, Central West End, Chesterfield, Florissant, Ferguson, and the rest of the metro, and we can usually get a roofer out the same day.

Common questions
Can you fix the leak without replacing the whole skylight?
Most of the time, yes. Leaks usually come from failed flashing or dried sealant, not the skylight itself. We repair those directly. If the glass seal has failed and there's fog between the panes, that unit is done and we'll tell you straight so you can decide on replacement.
How fast can a roofer get to my house?
We aim for same-day across St. Louis and the surrounding suburbs. If a storm is moving through and it isn't safe to work on the roof yet, we'll get you a tarp-over first and come back to finish once it clears.
Is this from the skylight or the roof around it?
That's exactly what the water test answers. Water travels under the shingles before it drips, so the stain can be inches or feet from the opening. We find the true source instead of just caulking the nearest gap and hoping.
Should I file an insurance claim?
If the leak came from storm or hail damage, it may be covered. Take photos of the ceiling and any water inside, and don't toss damaged materials. We can walk the roof, document what we find, and help you through the claim.
